What is AddThis?
We use plug-ins from AddThis, a service provided by Oracle America, Inc. (500 Oracle Parkway, Redwood Shores, CA 94065, USA), on our website. These plug-ins allow you to quickly and easily share content from our site with others. When you visit a page containing an AddThis feature, your data may be transferred to AddThis, stored, and processed. This privacy statement explains why we use AddThis, which data is processed, and how you can prevent data transfer.

AddThis develops software tools embedded in websites to enable users to share content on various social media channels or via email. AddThis also offers website analytics features. Collected data is additionally used to serve interest-based advertising to internet users. The service is used by more than 15 million website operators worldwide.

Why do we use AddThis on our website?

Using the AddThis buttons allows you to share interesting content from our website on various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest. We’re delighted when you share our content with your social community—and AddThis makes it easy.

What data does AddThis store?

When you share content via AddThis while logged into a social network, data such as your website visit and shared content can be linked to your social media account. AddThis uses cookies, pixels, HTTP headers, and browser identifiers to collect data about your browsing behavior. Some of this data is shared pseudonymously with third parties.

Examples of possibly processed data:

  • Unique ID placed by a browser cookie

  • URL of the visited webpage

  • Time and date of visit

  • Search terms used to reach an AddThis-enabled page

  • Time spent on the page

  • IP address of your device

  • Mobile advertising IDs (Apple IDFA or Google AAID)

  • Information contained in HTTP headers or other transmission protocols

  • Browser or operating system (e.g. iOS)

AddThis cookies include, for example:

NameValuePurposeExpires

bt28961a7f179d87qq69V69122475557-3Records parts of visited site to recommend other partsAfter 255 days

bkura/99nTmYN+fZWX7122475557-4Logs anonymized user data like IP, location, visited websites, and clicked adsAfter 179 days

This is a non-exhaustive example. For full details, see AddThis’s privacy policy. AddThis may share collected data with other companies to build interest-based advertising profiles and target ads across its network.

How long and where is the data stored?

AddThis retains collected data for 13 months from collection. Additionally, 1% of data is kept in “pattern datasets” for up to 24 months to maintain business analytics. In these, direct and indirect identifiers (e.g. IP and cookie ID) are hashed—making re-identification impossible without additional information. Since AddThis is based in the USA, the data is also stored on US servers.

How can I delete my data or prevent storage?

You have the right to access and delete your personal data. To opt out of interest-based advertising, use the Oracle opt-out tool, which places an opt-out cookie you must not delete to maintain your settings:

You can also manage browser-level settings—via the “Cookies” section of your browser’s documentation—to block or delete cookies at any time.

Legal basis

If you consent to data being processed by embedded social media tools, this consent serves as the legal basis for processing (Art 6(1)(a) GDPR). We may also process data based on our legitimate interest (Art 6(1)(f) GDPR) in providing quick and effective communication, but only after your consent. Most social platforms also set cookies; please read our Cookie Policy and each provider’s privacy policy carefully.

Since AddThis processes data in the US, the European Court of Justice currently considers US data protection insufficient. This may entail legal and security risks. AddThis relies on the EU Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (Art 46(2), (3) GDPR) when transferring data to third countries to ensure EU-level protection. The clauses and implementing decision are available via EU Commission sources.

For further information on AddThis’s processing, please see: https://www.oracle.com/legal/privacy/addthis-privacy-policy.html.

Instagram Privacy Policy

Summary

  • Subjects: Website visitors

  • Purpose: Improve our services

  • Data processed: User behavior, device information, IP address, etc.

  • Storage duration: Until Instagram no longer needs the data

  • Legal basis: Consent (Art 6(1)(a) GDPR) and legitimate interest (Art 6(1)(f) GDPR)

What is Instagram?

We embed Instagram features on our website. Instagram is a social media platform operated by Instagram LLC (1601 Willow Rd, Menlo Park, CA 94025, USA), a subsidiary of Meta Platforms Inc. since 2012, part of the Facebook family. Embedding content (e.g. buttons, photos, videos) transmits data to Instagram’s servers. Instagram uses the same systems as Facebook, so your data is processed across Facebook companies.

Why do we use Instagram on our website?

Instagram is one of the fastest-growing social platforms. We embed Instagram features to enrich our content with helpful, entertaining, or inspiring material. Since Instagram is part of Facebook/Meta, the collected data may also be used for personalized advertising on Facebook. We receive aggregated analytics—which do not personally identify you—to better understand user preferences.

What data does Instagram store?

When visiting a page with Instagram features, your browser connects to Instagram servers and transmits data—regardless of whether you have an account. This includes site information, device data, purchases, ads viewed, usage behavior, date/time of interaction. If logged in, Instagram stores significantly more.

Instagram differentiates between customer data (e.g. name, address, phone number, IP—often hashed before transmission) and event data (behavioral data). Cookies automatically transfer data to Facebook as soon as Instagram features are encountered. Data is typically anonymized or deleted within 90 days after matching.

Common cookies set during a visit (assuming no Instagram account login):

  • csrftoken – Likely security token; expires in 1 year

  • mid – Assigns a unique user ID for service optimization; session cookie

  • fbsr_... – Stores Instagram login requests; session cookie

  • rur – Ensures Instagram functionality; session cookie

  • urlgen – Used for marketing purposes; session cookie

This is not exhaustive. Cookie presence depends on feature usage and login status.

How long and where is the data stored?

Instagram shares data across Facebook companies, with external partners, and globally. Data processing complies with Meta’s privacy policy. Servers are distributed worldwide, primarily in the USA.

How can I delete my data or disable storage?

Under GDPR, you have rights to access, port, correct, and delete data. Use your Instagram account settings to manage data. To delete your account entirely, log in via the Instagram app, go to Help → Manage your account → Delete your account. Deleting the account removes your posts and status updates; shared content by others remains.

You can also manage or delete cookies via your browser settings, or configure it to prompt for consent before cookies are placed.

Legal basis

Processing through social media embeds is based on your consent (Art 6(1)(a)) or our legitimate interest (Art 6(1)(f)), and only after consent. Many platforms also set cookies—please review our Cookie Policy and each provider’s cookie/privacy terms.

Instagram/Facebook transfers data to the US, which the European Court of Justice considers lacking adequate protection. This may pose legality and security risks. Meta uses EU-approved Standard Contractual Clauses (Art 46(2), (3) GDPR) to maintain EU-level data protection. The relevant decision and clauses can be accessed via EU Commission sources.

We have endeavored to summarize Instagram's data processing. See https://help.instagram.com/519522125107875 for the full policy.
